Dr. Heber Varela is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He also holds board certifications in Clinical Neurophysiology and Neuromuscular medicine.  He practices general adult neurology with special interest in electromyography (EMG) and neuromuscular disorders, especially Guillain Barre Syndrome, Myasthenia Gravis and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). 

Dr. Varela obtained his Medical Degree from the Universidad Central del Ecuador, and he was valedictorian of his graduating class. Dr. Varela completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, and residency in Neurology at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. He then completed a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology with special interest in Electromyography and Neuromuscular disorders at Mayo Clinic school of Medicine in Jacksonville, Florida. 

Dr. Varela is a former assistant Professor of Neurology, Associate Program Director of the residency program and Director of the Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship at the University of South Florida. He was also a staff Neurologist at James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa before he joined our group 4 year sago.

Dr. Varela was born in Havana, Cuba is fluent in English and Spanish.
