obese1How is this declaration different from announcing other diagnoses? Consider, we do not say: “You are Alzheimer’s”, “You are Parkinson’s Disease”, “You are coronary artery disease”, “You are diabetes”, “You are asthma”…

Obesity is the only diagnosis we say the patient IS, not HAS. Ironically, a key component in fighting disease is for the patient to constructively deny it. In other words, do all one’s doctors prescribe, but deny being “sick”, refuse to be defined by the malady.  Rather difficult to do when one is told he/she IS the disease.

Obesity is a disease people have. Fighting one’s way out of it is difficult enough without a self fulfilling prophecy looming.  So, the declaration should be, “You have obesity.” One can fight something they have much more easily than something they are…
